(2027 Lunar New Year Guitar Night)新闻发布会在大多伦多地区万锦市举行。
Don Ross

Six Strings, Many Cultures: Toronto’s 2027 Lunar New Year Guitar Night Announced
International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion Don Ross and Chinese-Canadian Guitarist Xiaohui Chen to Headline a Multicultural Celebration in Richmond Hill
TORONTO, ON — October 2026
Music knows no borders, and sometimes six strings are all it takes to bring people together.
The Chinese-Canadian Solo Guitar Society held a press conference in Markham, Ontario, on October 10, 2026, officially announcing the 2027 Metro Direction Financial Toronto Lunar New Year Guitar Night, scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2027, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at D&H Centre in Richmond Hill.
Bringing together accomplished guitarists and musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds, the upcoming concert promises an afternoon of exceptional musicianship, artistic collaboration, and cross-cultural celebration.
Unlike conventional Lunar New Year variety shows, this special event places the guitar at the centre of the celebration, featuring fingerstyle, classical guitar, jazz, acoustic performances, vocal accompaniment, and collaborative musical arrangements.

International Guitar Champion Don Ross Leads the Lineup
One of the evening’s most anticipated performers is internationally acclaimed Canadian fingerstyle guitarist Don Ross, a two-time winner of the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 1988 and 1996.
Recognized internationally for his distinctive playing technique and innovative compositions, Ross blends elements of jazz, folk, rock, and other musical traditions into a powerful and expressive acoustic guitar style.
His signature approach, often associated with the term “Heavy Wood,” combines intricate melodies, rhythmic percussion, bass lines, and harmonies, creating the remarkable impression of several instruments being played simultaneously.
Joining Ross on stage is Xiaohui Chen, an accomplished Chinese guitarist and vocalist with more than three decades of performance experience.
Chen won second place in the singing-and-guitar category at China’s Fourth National Guitar Competition in 2002. His musical approach combines sophisticated fingerstyle techniques with expressive Chinese-language songs, bridging instrumental artistry and vocal storytelling.
Their participation highlights the evening’s commitment to bringing together different musical traditions through artistic exchange.

A Multicultural Stage Bringing Global Musical Traditions Together
The concert will also feature a diverse group of performers, including Leo Song, Crystal Hao, Kyoko Yokoma, Koji Hori, Andy Li, Gabby Nozaki, and Roberto Nozaki.
Japanese jazz guitarist Koji Hori, originally from Kyoto, will bring the spontaneity and expressive freedom of jazz to the stage.
Young fingerstyle guitarist Leo Song will showcase technically demanding contemporary guitar arrangements, while classical guitarist Andy Li will introduce audiences to the elegance and precision of classical guitar performance.
Roberto Nozaki, whose musical background reflects Brazilian influences, will perform alongside his daughter, Gabby Nozaki, offering a touching example of musical connection across generations.
Crystal Hao and jazz vocalist Kyoko Yokoma will further enrich the program with their distinctive musical interpretations.
From American folk and blues to jazz improvisation, Brazilian Bossa Nova, classical repertoire, and contemporary fingerstyle compositions, the concert will celebrate the versatility of the guitar as a truly international instrument.
Organizers are also planning a collaborative finale bringing participating guitarists together on one stage, symbolizing harmony and shared artistic expression across cultures.

From the Chinese-Canadian Community to a Multicultural Musical Celebration
Founded by three Chinese-Canadian musicians, the Chinese-Canadian Solo Guitar Society was established to encourage guitar education, artistic exchange, and opportunities for musicians and enthusiasts to connect.
The upcoming Lunar New Year Guitar Night represents an important step in expanding the society’s activities from community gatherings to a larger public performance.
Although the organization has its roots in the Chinese-Canadian community, the event embraces a distinctly multicultural vision, welcoming performers from different countries, generations, and musical backgrounds.
This approach reflects the cultural character of the Greater Toronto Area, where communities from around the world contribute to an exceptionally diverse artistic landscape.
By placing the guitar at the centre of the event, the organizers hope to create a shared experience that transcends language and cultural differences.
The concert offers an opportunity for audiences to discover how distinct traditions can coexist, complement one another, and create something meaningful together.

Community and Business Partners Support the Arts
The event’s title sponsor is Metro Direction Financial Inc., a Canadian financial services organization established in 2003.
Through its sponsorship, the company is supporting an initiative that promotes artistic expression, cultural participation, and community engagement.
Special recognition is extended to Kevin Huang, a licensed insurance and financial advisor associated with Metro Direction Financial, for his support of the event.
Additional sponsorship comes from Dr. Yan Ling Liang, an optometrist specializing in neuro-visual rehabilitation and vision care at Warden Optometry and Neuro Vision.
Sunny Yuxin Counselling & Social Work Services, which provides mental health, relationship, and family counselling support, is also contributing to the event.
Other supporting organizations include Superstar Music Studio, Xiaohui Guitar, and HiPhoto.
The participation of professionals and organizations across the financial, healthcare, wellness, music education, and creative sectors reflects the important role of community partnerships in making local cultural events possible.
Together, these contributions help provide a platform for established artists, emerging performers, and music enthusiasts to share their passion with a broader audience.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Through the Universal Language of Music
Scheduled for the beginning of 2027, the Toronto Lunar New Year Guitar Night offers families, music students, guitar enthusiasts, and the wider community an opportunity to welcome the new year through live music.
More than a concert, the event reflects the role of the arts in connecting people across different cultural and generational backgrounds.
For many Canadians, music serves as a bridge between the traditions they inherit and the communities they now call home.
The guitar, with its extraordinary versatility and presence across musical cultures, provides a natural medium for such connections.
Whether expressing the melodies of a distant homeland, the rhythms of Latin America, the improvisational spirit of jazz, or the intricacy of contemporary fingerstyle compositions, each performance contributes to a shared musical experience.

At title sponsor Maida Financial, a small press conference was held for this Guitar Spring Festival Gala, and several sponsors were interviewed. We also made it to the first rehearsal of two musicians! They shone from the very first rehearsal! I wouldn’t say all the guitar masters are at our Guitar Spring Festival Gala, but every guitarist performing at the Guitar Spring Festival Gala is a master!

One guitar can tell a story. Many guitars can bring cultures together.
