【 Canadian Chinese Media News website 2021-4-1 report 】
Recently, Weng Guo-ning, president of The Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations , spoke to this media about the severe discrimination and hatred against Asian people in North America caused by the epidemic, as well as the rising tide of “anti-discrimination, anti-hatred and anti-violence” spontaneous protest movement.
The United States and Canada are the most famous countries for immigrants in the world, especially the beautiful Canada. With its great multicultural policy, millions of immigrants around the world have come to the maple leaf country that advocates freedom, equality and respect, Weng said.
However, even Canada, a great country, has a history of serious discrimination and persecution against ethnic minorities.
Such as the early persecution of indigenous people, the infamous “Chinese Exclusion Act” and the “poll tax”, and the persecution of Jews and Japanese during World War II……
Although the Canadian government has made many apologies or reparations for the above acts, Canadian laws also explicitly sanction hate crimes against ethnic minorities.
But has discrimination and hatred against minorities stopped?
No! None!!
The recent spate of hate crimes against Asians is the most powerful proof.
As Asian Canadians, we don’t want to be called names! We don’t want people pouring coffee on us!We don’t want to be beaten up for no reason!
Popular movements against discrimination, hatred and violence need to be sustained for a long time.
I hereby appeal to the Canadian government and the Canadian people to establish a National Day against Racial Discrimination in Canada. The proposed date is April 17th every year.
To highlight Canada’s national will and determination to resolutely oppose racial discrimination, promote the continuous improvement and effective implementation of relevant laws, regulations, policies and measures against discrimination, hatred and violence, and inspire people’s confidence in anti-discrimination, anti-hatred and anti-violence!
To achieve this goal, the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations will launch an online signature to support the appeal.
