【 Canadian Chinese Media News Net 2021-4-1 Report 】
Recently, Guoning Weng, President of the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations, spoke to this media with regards to the severe discrimination and hatred against Asians caused by the pandemic in North America as well as the increasingly raging tide of “anti-discrimination, anti-hatred and anti-violence” spontaneous protest mass movement.
The United States and Canada are two of the most desired countries for immigrants globally, particularly Canada. Attracted by its multiculturalism policy, millions of immigrants worldwide have come to this beautiful maple leaf country that upholds freedom, equality, and respect, Weng said.
However, even a country as great as Canada has a history of grave discrimination and persecution against ethnic minorities, such as the early persecution of the Aboriginal people, the infamous “Chinese Exclusion Act” and the “Head Tax”, and the persecution of Japanese Canadians during World War II……
Even though the Canadian government has made multiple apologies or reparations for the above acts and Canadian laws prosecute hate crimes against any identifiable group, has discrimination and hatred against ethnic minorities stopped?
No! Not at all!
The recent spike in hate crimes against Asians is the most compelling evidence.
As Asian Canadians, we don’t want name-calling! We don’t want coffee poured on us! We don’t want to be beaten up!
The “anti-discrimination, anti-hatred and anti-violence” mass movement needs to be sustained for a long time.
I now appeal to the Canadian government and the Canadian people to establish a National Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: the proposed date is May 15th every year, to showcase Canada’s strong national will and determination to oppose racial discrimination; to promote the continuous improvement and effective implementation of relevant laws, regulations, policies and measures against discrimination, hatred and violence; and to increase people’s confidence in anti-discrimination, anti-hatred and anti-violence!
In order to achieve this goal, the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations will launch an online petition to support the appeal.
Thank you all for your support.
